Nicotine Pouches vs Snus, Vape, and Cigarettes: A Canadian Category Guide

Quick links: shop our top picks — ZYN Cool Blueberry 11mg, White Fox Black 12mg, Pablo Frosted Ice 30mg, Velo Mighty Peppermint 17mg. Or buy nicotine pouches in Canada with free shipping over $99.

Four ways to consume nicotine, four different products. Cigarettes have been around forever. Vapes hit mainstream a decade ago. Modern nicotine pouches launched mass-market in the mid-2010s. Traditional Swedish snus is even older. This guide explains how they differ across format, regulation, cost, and felt experience — without making claims about safety we’re not qualified to make.

Nicotine pouches in detail

Modern all-white pouches (ZYN, VELO, White Fox, Pablo) are tobacco-free. A plant-fibre base (processed wood and cellulose) holds the nicotine + flavour + sweetener. You place the pouch under your upper lip and leave it for 20–45 minutes. Nicotine releases into saliva, absorbs through your mouth lining. No smoke, no vapour, no spit, no stain.

Strengths in Canada: 3mg (ZYN Mini) to 30mg (Pablo Exclusive). See our strength guide for what each tier feels like.

Cost in Canada: $15/can typical (20 pouches per can). Tier discounts at 5+ and 10+ cans. Most users use 4–10 pouches per day depending on strength.

Pros for buyers: no smoke, no vapour, no smell, no visible action, broad flavour catalogue, works indoors anywhere chewing gum does.

Cons: still nicotine (addictive), under-lip irritation possible at heavy use, distribution at convenience retail is narrow (online has the broader selection).

For a primer on how to use one, see our step-by-step guide.

Traditional Swedish snus

The old version of pouches. Brown tobacco leaf (cured, ground) in a small pouch placed under the upper lip. Modern Swedish snus is pasteurized rather than fermented (different from American chewing tobacco) and has been used in Sweden continuously since the 18th century. See Wikipedia’s snus article for the full history.

Distribution in Canada: very limited. Traditional Swedish snus has restricted legal status in Canada under specific tobacco regulations — most snus sold in Canadian retail today is either grey-market import or all-white nicotine pouches mis-labelled “snus.” Genuine Swedish snus is uncommon at Canadian convenience retail.

vs Nicotine pouches: snus contains tobacco, pouches don’t. Snus has the characteristic brown leaf flavour; pouches use flavouring compounds with no leaf. Snus can stain teeth slightly over heavy use; pouches don’t. Otherwise the format (under-lip placement, 30–60 minute session) is nearly identical.

The category collision matters because many North American buyers say “snus” when they mean nicotine pouches, and vice versa. They’re related but distinct products.

Vapes (e-cigarettes / vaping products)

Heated liquid containing propylene glycol, glycerin, flavouring, and nicotine. The user inhales vapour. Devices range from disposable single-use pens to refillable pod systems and box mods.

Strength: typically measured in mg/mL (e.g., 20mg/mL juice). A typical vape session draws 10–30 puffs, each releasing a small fraction of the juice’s nicotine. Total nicotine intake per session is hard to compare directly to a pouch’s mg/pouch figure.

Canadian regulation: stricter than pouches. The federal Tobacco and Vaping Products Act regulates vapes; Quebec banned flavoured vaping products in 2023; other provinces have varying restrictions. Vapes can’t be used in most indoor public spaces (same restrictions as smoking).

vs Nicotine pouches:

  • Visibility: vapes produce visible vapour; pouches don’t.
  • Use case: vapes deliver nicotine in 5–15 minutes (quick bursts); pouches deliver over 30+ minutes (sustained).
  • Public use: pouches work indoors / at work / in restaurants where vapes don’t.
  • Flavour: both have broad flavour catalogues; vapes generally have more flavour products (though Quebec/other provinces restrict).
  • Cost: pouches cost $0.75–$1.50 per pouch (~30 min); vapes vary wildly by device + juice cost.
  • Hardware: vapes require devices that break/need charging; pouches don’t.

If discreet, hardware-free is the priority — pouches. If visible-vapour and broad flavour choice in shorter bursts is the priority — vapes.

Cigarettes

Combustible tobacco. The user inhales smoke produced by burning tobacco at high temperature. Smoke contains tar, carbon monoxide, and thousands of chemical compounds in addition to nicotine.

Cost in Canada: $14–$20 per pack of 20, varying heavily by province due to provincial tobacco tax. Average pack-a-day spend ranges $400–$600/month.

Canadian regulation: heaviest of all four categories. Plain packaging required, retail display restrictions, indoor smoking bans nationwide, vehicle smoking restrictions with minors, advertising bans.

vs Nicotine pouches:

  • Smoke / health profile: cigarettes produce combustion byproducts; pouches don’t. Health Canada explicitly notes combustion byproducts as the primary harm vector in cigarettes.
  • Session length: cigarettes go 5–10 minutes; pouches 20–45.
  • Visibility: cigarettes produce smoke + ash + smell; pouches don’t.
  • Public use: cigarettes restricted in most public spaces; pouches usable anywhere chewing gum is.
  • Cost: pouches at $0.75–$1.50 each, similar nicotine delivery to 1–2 cigarettes, often cheaper per nicotine unit at standard strengths.

Important: we don’t sell nicotine pouches as a smoking cessation aid. We can’t make those claims under Canadian regulation. If you’re trying to quit smoking, talk to a pharmacist about Zonnic (Health Canada NHP-classified cessation product) or other licensed cessation tools.

Use-case matrix

Scenario Best fit
Want nicotine, can’t smoke indoors Pouches
Want quick burst of nicotine, multiple times per day Vape (short sessions) or pouch (long sessions)
Want maximum flavour variety Pouches (Canadian) or vape (international markets)
Want zero visible action / vapour Pouches
Want long-lasting single dose Pouches
Want the traditional tobacco experience Snus or cigarettes
Heavy smoker reducing exposure Talk to a pharmacist about cessation products
Concerned about teeth/gum staining Pouches (least) or vape
Just curious about modern nicotine alternatives Pouches (lowest commitment, no hardware)

Cost comparison at typical usage

Rough monthly cost estimates for a moderate-usage adult:

  • Cigarettes (1 pack/day): ~$450/month average across Canada
  • Vape (1 disposable/week or pod system): $80–$200/month
  • Pouches (4–8 per day, mixed strengths at our tier pricing): ~$60–$120/month
  • Traditional snus (rare in CA): varies, usually $80+/month if importing

Pouches tend to be the most cost-efficient per “nicotine unit,” especially when buying at the 10+ can tier discount.

A note on safety

We sell adult legal products. We don’t make health claims about any of these four categories — that’s not our role, and Canadian regulation doesn’t permit it. For health information about nicotine use, talk to a healthcare provider or refer to Health Canada’s tobacco and vaping page.

What we will say: nicotine is addictive at any strength in any format. None of these four categories are nicotine-free. The choice between them is about format, distribution, cost, and personal preference — not about whether nicotine itself is in play.
